Given the detrimental effects of negative childbirth experience on mothers, fathers, and whole families, research evaluating interventions that may prevent or reduce such effects is warranted. The proposed project aims at testing the effectiveness of the midwife-led postpartum debriefing service, which we – following the recommendation of Sheen and Slade (2015) – refer to as a “childbirth review” in terms of postpartum mental health (including sleep), social relationships (couple’s satisfaction and bonding to the infant), parenting competencies, and future reproductive choices in mothers and fathers. This project will provide high-quality evidence regarding the effectiveness of this potentially protective intervention in both mothers and fathers to inform clinical practice. If proven effective, this intervention could be used in maternity care settings not only to help new parents process and make sense of their childbirth experience but also to identify parents who are at risk of developing mental health problems soon after childbirth, which would enable a timely referral to further professional support and help.
