Starting at a new university can be overwhelming - especially for students moving to a new country. In this section we will highlight the different steps to cover all your academic concerns.

Academic Calendar

The academic calendar can be found in the information system for the University (called the 'IS'). Make sure you have the correct term selected, and that 'FSS' is listed as your faculty.

Below is a quick definition of the different information provided in the academic calendar, in the order as they appear.

  • Apply for being enrolled in the term: students are required to enroll in the term, which is different than the courses. Students are emailed about how to register.
  • Term Enrolment: you must be enrolled during these times
  • Registration for courses: this is the time when registration is open
  • Course enrolment period: during this period you will be enrolled in the courses you registered in if you are accepted into the course
  • Course enrolment changes: During this time you can change the courses for the semester with no penalty. Students should make sure at the end of this period you are enrolled in a minimum of 20 credits.
  • Timetable release date: this is when the timetable, or schedule, of the courses will be released.
  • Enrolment in seminar groups: This is a specific time for enrolling in seminar classes.
  • Teaching: this is the dates when classes take place
  • Examination period: this is when exams will take place. Students are required to sign up for exams, and typically can take the exams a second or third time - however all grades will show up on your transcript!
  • Bachelors final state examination: the dates when the final state exam can be held
  • Masters final state examination: the dates when the final state exam can be held

Registration

Before you can start taking your classes, you must first register for them. The entire procedure is conducted via the Information System. Faculty registration schedules may differ. In the case of courses with limited capacity, the order in which students initially registered is decisive; In case your course is divided into several seminar groups, you must register for a particular group as well. Group registration also takes place via the IS at a designated time.

Enrollment for classes

After you've registered for the course, it's time to enroll. You will be enrolled automatically in all registered courses with fulfilled prerequisites, sufficient capacity, etc.

You may still cancel your course registration and enrolment if you change your mind. The latter may only be voided during the course enrolment change period. Please note that faculty schedules may differ.

  • Students need to pass 20 ECTS to move to the next semester, therefore we recommend you should be enrolled in 30 ECTS to also stay on track for graduation from your progrmmes study plan. We do not recommend enrolling in more than 35 ECTS in your first semester.
  • Do not enroll in the courses for diploma seminar – you only take this in your last year.
