The number of applications is rising once again, with interest from Slovakia at its highest level in the last five years

The end of February also marked the close of applications for full-time bachelor’s programs at MUNI. This gives us an opportunity to take a look at some interesting results.

A total of 4,931 applications were submitted, representing an increase compared to previous years. In 2024, 4,823 applications were received, making this a 2.2% year-over-year rise. This trend reflects the growing interest in our degree programs, even when compared to Masaryk University as a whole, which also saw overall growth—though some faculties experienced stagnation or a slight decline.

In addition to the overall increase in applications, we’ve seen a notable rise in interest from Slovakia. In 2025, the number of Slovak applications reached 780—65 more than in 2024 and 327 more than in 2021. The proportion of Slovak applicants rose from 14.8% in 2024 to 15.8% in 2025, representing a relative increase of 6.8%. This trend reflects the growing popularity of our programs among Slovak students. The heightened interest from applicants in Slovakia may also be the result of the faculty’s targeted recruitment campaign in the country, now in its second year, which engages local high school students through a variety of channels.

The distribution of Slovak applicants across individual programs also offers some interesting insights. The highest number applied to the International Relations program (211 applicants, 27.1%), while the lowest level of interest was in the Social Work program (20 applicants, 7.3%). There is also strong interest in the Psychology (192 applicants, 13.7%) and the Political Science programs (54 applicants, 17.3%).

Another significant development this year is a 10% increase in single-subject applications listed as the applicants‘ top choice compared to last year.

A major surprise this year is the Human Resource Development and Employment program, which has become the breakout success of the year. With 206 applicants, it more than doubled the numbers previously seen for its predecessor, Public and Social Policy and Human Resources.

We are now entering the next phase of the admissions process, as applicants prepare to sit for entrance exams and await their results. We will share updates on the number of admitted and subsequently enrolled students in one of the upcoming editions of the newsletter.
